Writer-director Janardhan Chikkanna, known for his cyber thriller Gultoo, is now venturing into comedy with his latest film Powder. Describing the challenges of writing and executing comedy, Janardhan explains that he put a lot of effort into refining the climactic scenes, which heavily feature visual effects, pushing the boundaries for a comedy film. In contrast to the typical budget constraints of comedy projects that rely on dialogue and situations for humor, Powder integrates visual comedy into its last 20 minutes. Janardhan emphasizes the importance of clean comedies in attracting a larger audience, highlighting the relaxation factor of comedic films that allows viewers to watch repeatedly.
The ensemble cast in Powder is a standout feature, comprising talented and experienced actors who each contribute significantly to their characters. Janardhan emphasizes the importance of giving every character a complete arc, utilizing the cast's strengths to maximize the comedic potential in each scene. He stresses that more screen time doesn't necessarily equate to character development, emphasizing the importance of showcasing the talents of the cast members effectively. While comedy has proven to be a challenging genre for me, I excel in writing thrillers. My creativity flows effortlessly when I tackle crime thrillers. Making the shift from a serious genre to comedy was tough, but working with comedy allows for a broader scope of creative experimentation, and I have given it my all.
